The use of THz technology for security applications is reviewed and recent developments discussed. It now seems unlikely that THz spectroscopy can be used to conduct identification of materials at standoff ranges. THz technology is becoming more widely deployed in other applications including non-destructive testing, medicine, food and drink analysis and communication and it is now becoming apparent that safety standards are required to limit the exposure to THz radiation. From a review of the current literature, it is clear that, under certain irradiation conditions, there may be mechanisms operating whereby THz radiation can influence the genetic process.
