Takeda uses terahertz pulsed imaging for analysis of layer separation in tablets

Leading scientists at Takeda Pharmaceutical Company have conducted groundbreaking quality control research of layer separation of pharmaceutical tablets using Terahertz Pulsed Imaging (TPI™). Data collection and findings are based on their use of TeraView’s TPI imaga 2000 system and are published in the International Journal of Pharmaceutics.
The research, Quantitative analysis of the layer separation risk in bilayer tablets using terahertz pulsed imaging, compares Terahertz Pulsed Imaging technique to other analytical methods and has determined that “TPI can aid in quality control by providing a precise estimate of the layer separation risk and robust quality of bilayer tablet development with better understanding of layer separation”.

In recent months, Terahertz Pulsed Imaging has received significant attention from the pharmaceutical research community with papers focusing the attention on the use of technique in the measurement and quality control of pharmaceutical coatings. TPI™ provides the ability to non-destructively and rapidly analyze the coating layer thickness and quality of coated pharmaceutical tablets and other solid dosage forms. Because it is non-destructive, tablets can be re-examined at later times to monitor coating stability or used for further functional studies with prior knowledge of the coating uniformity.
