Location: Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi Campus

Event Date: 8th of April, 2015

Khalifa University invites you to attend the "Latest Research Progress in Terahertz Quantum Cascade Laser at the University of Waterloo" talk by Prof. Dayan Ban as part of ICT & Smart Electronic Systems Research - Spring Seminar Series 2015.
Time: 12:00 - 1:00 PM
Location: H 213 (2nd Floor Auditorium), H Building
Abstract
Terahertz (TH) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) is one of the most important sources of coherent THz radiation, which have important applications for terahertz spectroscopy, terahertz imaging and terahertz communication. In this presentation, I will mainly report our recent progress in developing THz quantum cascade lasers that are based on indirect pumping (IDP) scheme [2-4]. Different from the RT-QCLs, in which the carriers are injected into the upper lasing state through resonant tunneling, the carriers in our IDP-QCLs are injected to the upper lasing state through longitudinal optical (LO) phonon scattering. The new active region scheme eliminates the so-called Fano effect.
About the Speaker
Dayan Ban is a Professor of Nanotechnology Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Waterloo. He received a B.Sc. and M.A.Sc at the University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, China. He received a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 2003. Dr. Ban has authored or coauthored over 140 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings and has contributed a chapter to the seminal book on novel scanning probe microscopy. He holds three patents in novel optoelectronic devices.
