Web-measurement systems uses terahertz technology

Advanced Photonix, Inc., has introduced the first on-line, industrial time domain, terahertz system for superior scanning web measurement. Its Picometrix T-Ray 4000® is the first web-measurement system for the converting/package printing marketplace to feature pulsed terahertz technology.

While improving product quality and reducing waste, the Picometrix T-Ray 4000® is the non-nucleonic, non-ionizing, non-contact measurement solution that combines basis weight, percent moisture, caliper thickness and multilayer thickness measurements into one ultra-fast multifunction sensor.

In addition to the previously mentioned measurements, the T-Ray® system has a unique single sided measurement format and can detect delamination and sense adhesion degradation with speed of light precision. A single T-Ray unit can replace multiple scanning nucleonic systems for lamination and composite lines. It provides superior precision, and inherent safety for the product and the manufacturing personnel. Measurements are inherently same-spot, so real-time “all-the-time” validation is assured.

Tighter process control with a T-Ray® system will improve the process capability index as well as reduce control lag on startup and grade changes. The T-Ray® measures caliper thickness directly without a mass composition dependent conversion. T-Ray® offers the first web scanning sensor that can feedback control an automatic die using true caliper thickness precise to two femtoseconds of light speed.

Rick Kurtz, CEO of Advanced Photonix, says “We are very excited to bring this new technology to the web converting and packaging industry, the added functionality and enhanced safety are key attributes that will provide our customers with cost savings and improved product quality.” The Picometrix T-Ray 4000 has been under development since 1996 and was chosen by NASA to measure the foam blanket on the Space Shuttle External Fuel Tank. The Air Force uses it for measuring the thickness of the radar absorbing coating on the outside of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.  Now this advanced technology is being brought to the converting and packaging industry to enhance their manufacturing processes.
