Abstract-Terahertz Detection of Vulnerable Vascular Plaques

My Note: I have been wondering when the use of THz would move directly into vascular diagnostics. I anticipate many, many applications.

Acute cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease is common and frequently-occurring, which is the most serious threat to human. Its morbidity and mortality have been much higher than other diseases including cancer and AIDS. Especially, it is more common in middle-aged and elderly over 50 years of age. Even for the most advanced and comprehensive treatment, there are still more than 50% of the survivors of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease can not take care of themselves. In recent years, as the continuous improvement of living standards of residents and the continuing deterioration of the natural environment, the prevalence, morbidity and mortality are upward year after year of elderly in China. All in all, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease is a one of the world’s most serious diseases. The atherosclerotic plaque rupture is the trigger of acute cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. So detection of vulnerable plaque is great significance for early intervention. Now a variety of detection methods, both invasive and non-invasive, have been developed for the assessment of atherosclerosis plaques, such as ultrasound, multi-slice spiral CT, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, coronary angiography, intravascular ultrasound and so on. This article will briefly review some of the existing methods of detection of vascular plaque. This thesis devoted to analysis existing detection method of atherosclerotic vascular plaques and study detection method of vascular plaques with new terahertz technology, the author hope that this paper could distinguish the difference between vascular plaques and normal tissues from terahertz spectroscopy. First, this paper analyzed distribution of vascular plaques in terahertz spectra based on its composition of pathology. Then the difference between vascular plaques and normal tissue of vessel wall was extracted through experiment. This study was still at primary stage of using terahertz technology on biomedical, because terahertz technology was immature. Finally the terahertz spectral characteristics of vascular plaques was extracted by use of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, it made another step to develop terahertz technology in medicine.
