Metallic electric split-ring resonators (SRRs) with featured size in micrometer scale, which are connected by thin metal wires, are patterned to form a periodically distributed planar array. The arrayed metallic SRRs are fabricated on an n-doped gallium arsenide (n-GaAs) layer grown directly over a semi-insulating gallium arsenide (SI-GaAs) wafer. The patterned metal microstructures and n-GaAs layer construct a Schottky diode, which can support an external voltage applied to modify the device properties. The developed architectures present typical functional metamaterial characters, and thus is proposed to reveal voltage adjusting characteristics in the transmission of terahertz waves at normal incidence. We also demonstrate the terahertz transmission characteristics of the voltage controlled Fabry-Pérot-based metamaterial device, which is composed of arrayed metallic SRRs. To date, many metamaterialsdeveloped in earlier works have been used to regulate the transmission amplitude or phase at specific frequencies in terahertz wavelength range, which are mainly dominated by the inductance-capacitance () resonance mechanism. However, in our work, the external voltage controlled metamaterial device is developed, and the extraordinary transmission regulation characteristics based on both the Fabry-Pérot (FP) resonance and relatively weak surface plasmon polariton (SPP) resonance in 0.025-1.5 THz range, are presented. Our research therefore shows a potential application of the dual-mode-resonance-based metamaterial for improving terahertz transmission regulation.

In order to observe more properties of an electrically resonant metamaterial-sensor, a single cubic unit of the matamaterial-sensor was simulated using the finite-element algorithm and Microwave Studios by CST. Meanwhile, an adaptive mesh refinement was used to ensure an accurate numerical solution with relatively short calculation time. In order to effectively conduct the simulation, some field monitors were also added to help the observation of electromagnetic properties of the unit. Through the electromagnetic simulation, the transmission and reflection spectra of the unit metamaterial-sensor were acquired. At the SRR gap, each kind of metamaterial-sensor structure presents an obvious resonant response at several THz frequency points. Simulation results indicated that the transmission was as low as 0.03 at ~0.79 THz. Other simulation results such as the surface current, the electric field, the electric energy density, and the power loss density, were also observed. By analyzing the simulation results, an idea to obtain the resonant strength in an indirect way was worked out and a way was found to realize the multispectral imaging in THz region. © (2015) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). We demonstrate some metamaterials in the terahertz frequency regime fabricated on n-GaAs substrate. The artificially structured electromagnetic materials, which called metamaterials, has led to the realization of phenomena which cannot be obtained with natural materials. We have found many fundamental progress and applications of metamaterials in millimeter wave or microwave, and many usefully potential applications of terahertz as well, but still need considerable efforts to fill this “THz-gap” in future. Therefore, it is especially important to design the metamaterials device in the terahertz frequency regime. For the first, we analyze the split ring resonators(SRRs) model in theory, and many planar SRR arrays with different periodic structures have been designed for later testing, the planar SRR arrays are fabricated using conventional photolithography and electron-beam deposition of gold on n-GaAs substrate, the metal array and n- GaAs together form a Schottky contact. Then the influences of background substrate and the shapes of the SRRs on the terahertz resonance are experimentally investigated at several terahertz frequencies of continuous wave terahertz laser in turn, and all the transmission properties are recoded and analyzed. These metamaterials may be useful for future applications in the construction of various THz filters, THz antenna, or THz grid structures ideal for constructing THz switching devices. © (2013) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).
