Two-Port VNA Makes On-Wafer Measurements At 500 GHz

Deutsch: Firmenlogo von Agilent TechnologiesD
Image representing Northrop Grumman as depicte...Image via CrunchBase

Although automotive radar systems operating at 77 and 79 GHz may seem like the upper limits of microwave engineering technology, a growing number of researchers are looking to tap into terahertz radio technologies. One group, led by scientists from the California Institute of Technology, GGB Industries, and Northrop Grumman Corp., recently reported on two-port on-wafer vector network analyzer (VNA) measurements from 325 to 508 GHz. The measurements were made with the help of prototype WR2.2 coplanar waveguide probes from GGB Industries and WR2.2 frequency extenders from Oleson Microwave Laboratories. The VNA calibration was performed using a through-reflect-line (TRL) technique.
In the test set, the high-frequency probes and frequency extenders were linked with a model 8510C VNA from Agilent Technologies, with a nominal coaxial top frequency of 50 GHz. The S-parameters of the WR2.2 probes were determined by means of a calibration process performed with the WinCal™ software tool from Cascade Microtech.
The calibrated test system was used to perform on-wafer measurements on amplifiers fabricated in Northrop Grumman’s sub-50-nm indium-phosphide (InP) high-electron-mobility-transistor (HEMT) process. One of these devices was a single-stage amplifier capable of operation through 508 GHz. Another circuit was an amplifier that exhibited small-signal gain of 6.2 dB at 401 GHz. In both cases, the measurements were close to the results predicted by simulations. See “On-Wafer S-Parameter Measurements in the 325-508-GHz Band,” IEEE Transactions on Terahertz Science and Technology, Vol. 2, No. 2, March 2012, p. 186.

Agilent Technologies (With Help from Virginia Diodes)Delivers THz Vector Network Analysis Measurement Solution

Agilent Technologies
MY NOTE: THIS IS A LITTLE DATED, BUT I JUST CAME ACROSS THE STORY ON THE THz VIRTUAL JOURNAL.
http://THzNetwork.net/index.php/archives/1245
Agilent Technologies Inc. today announced delivery of the world’s first fully integrated 1.1-THz network analysis measurement solution to Japan’s Yamaguchi University. The solution will play a critical role in enabling the university to study metamaterials at THz frequencies.
The THz region of the electromagnetic spectrum has enormous potential for high-data-rate communications, advanced electronic materials spectroscopy, space research, medicine, biology, surveillance and remote sensing. Despite its potential, the THz region remains one of the most unexplored areas of the spectrum. And, since high-power THz sources rely heavily on materials with advantageous properties in the THz frequency range, materials research is a critical component of modern THz systems.
Agilent’s integrated measurement solution addresses this challenge by enabling accurate measurement of THz signals in new materials. Such information is critical to the successful resolution of Yamaguchi University’s materials research.
Agilent’s solution features the world’s first fully calibrated, 750-GHz to 1.1-THz frequency extension module, the WR-01, from Virginia Diodes Inc., coupled with Agilent’s high-performance 50-GHz PNA-X vector network analyzer. Together, these tools allow for a fully calibrated, vector network analysis measurement with greater than 50 dB of dynamic range.
For the first time, users can take advantage of the PNA-X’s calibration technology to make stable and repeatable THz measurements. The instrument’s dynamic range also ensures that users can easily achieve highly sensitive measurements. And, with the frequency extension module’s ability to operate across the 750-GHz to 1.-THz frequency range, users can now easily capture higher resolution images as well.
“At Virginia Diodes, our mission is to make the THz region of the electromagnetic spectrum as useful for scientific, military and commercial applications as the microwave and infrared bands are today,” said Thomas Crowe, chief executive officer of Virginia Diodes. “Our development of the WR-01 extender delivers on this promise, offering the excellent dynamic range and bandwidth required for THz-calibrated vector network analyzer measurements.”
“Working closely with Virginia Diodes, we were able to integrate the WR-01 extender into our PNA-X vector network analyzer, further extending its capabilities and enabling fast and accurate measurements at THz,” said Gregg Peters, vice president and general manager of Agilent’s Component Test Division. “This development further demonstrates our commitment to continual measurement innovation and ensuring our customers have the tools they need to stay ahead of the curve.”
Agilent’s PNA-X vector network analyzer provides the industry’s widest range of measurement applications, from RF to millimeter wave. Among its new features are sample-centric workflows and new experimental tools to expand the applications suite and improve productivity. Introducing qNMR: a powerful new quantification toolkit for absolute concentration determination without the need for an internal standard or external reference signal. An improved DOSY application enables more accurate and precise measurement of diffusion coefficients along with multi-exponential fitting for clean separation of overlapped signals. New Hadamard versions of common experiments offer a time-saving of up to an order of magnitude, enabling higher throughput when time is precious.
The OneNMR Probe – expanding the family
Agilent has expanded its portfolio of OneNMR probes to include automated versions with automated tuning capabilities at 500 and 600MHz. This technology platform enables researchers to utilize a single probe to perform experiments on multiple nuclei measure without switching probes.
Narrow Bore HXFY Probe adds capabilities for solid-state experiments
The new Narrow Bore HFXY Probe utilizes the same T3 technology found in the Wide Bore HXFY MAS Probe, but in a more compact unit with smaller internal diameter magnets than existing Wide Bore HFXY probes. Ideal for complex solid state NMR applications, the Narrow Bore HXFY probe enables a wider range of experiments without swapping probes.
New Ultra-High-Field spectrometers at 850 MHz and 1GHz
The Gigahertz project will leverage Agilent’s full capabilities in magnet and probe design, electronic measurement and systems integration, to deliver world class performance for researchers working to understand the structure and dynamics of macromolecules.
Collaboration with Bridge12 Technologies to further expand applications for solid state NMR
As part of its commitment to expand NMR applications, Agilent has also entered into a co-marketing agreement with Bridge12 Technologies. This early stage company is a provider of critical components for an emerging application known as Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) that holds the promise of significantly improving measurement sensitivity for solid state samples.
A New Center of Excellence at the Santa Clara Campus, California
A fully-equipped Application Laboratory has been built on the main Santa Clara site, specifically for NMR, MRI, and XRD. The new facility will have fully-enabled demo systems for 800MHz, 700MHz, 2x 600MHz, and 2x 500MHz DD2 spectrometers, a 400MR DD2 spectrometer, an 11.7T/160mm DD2 MRI system, and two X-ray Diffraction Spectrometers.
