The progress achieved in the last decades in the performance of ultrafast laser systems with high average power has been tremendous, and continues to provide momentum to new exciting applications, both in scientific research and technology. Among the various technological advances that have shaped this progress, modelocked thin-disk oscillators have attracted significant attention as a unique technology capable of providing ultrashort pulses with high energy (tens to hundreds of microjoules) and at very high repetition rates (in the megahertz regime) from a single table-top oscillator. This technology opens the door to compact high-repetition rate ultrafast sources spanning the entire electromagnetic spectrum from the XUV to the Terahertz regime, opening various new application fields. In this article, we focus on their unexplored potential as compact driving sources for high average power THz generation.
