Theory of terahertz (THz) spectroscopy is considered using general dispersion models for interaction of electromagnetic radiation with a medium. Key concepts exploited are the frequency-dependent complex refractive index and reflection coefficient, which are intrinsic material properties that can be used for identification of different materials due to specific spectral fingerprints. Attention is paid to issues related to the extraction of correct THz spectra with the aid of dispersion relations.
