Nanoscale patterning using electron beam lithography allows to engineer miniband structure of a two-dimensional electron gas. Some years ago, a proposal has been put forward to create miniband structure similar to graphene. Brief review of the experimental quest for such artificial graphene will be given and some new results of optical probing of this system will be presented. Consistence of their interpretation with the artificial graphene model will be discussed.
